DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM



What is  decision support system?

  • This system is actually enables managers to get answer for unanticipated questions.
  • Teams formed to address large problems use group decision support system (GDSS).


Decision support system consists of :

  1. User
  2. System software
  3. Internal and External data 
  4. Decision models
A user is any individual who uses a computer. 


System software is "Background" software that enables the application software to interact with the computer. System software consists of the operating system, utilities, device drivers and language translators. It works with application software to handle the majority of technical details.


Internal data is data from within an organization consisting principally of transactions from the transaction processing system. Meanwhile external data is data gathered from outside an organization. Examples are data provided by marketing research firms.


The decision model gives the Decision Support System its analytical capabilities. There are three types of models included in the decision model: Tactical, Operational, and Strategic model.

  • Tacticle model is a decision model that assists middle-level managers to control the work of the organization, such as financial planning and sales promotion planning. 

  • Operational model is a decision model that helps lower level managers accomplish the organization's day-to-day activities, such as evaluating and maintaining quality control. 

  • Strategic model is a decision model that assists top managers in long-range planning, such as stating company objectives or planning plant locations.
